we are proud to announce that andreas tilliander is back on echocord after 15 years. this march sees echocord release the ofog ep comprising three original productions from swedens andreas tilliander. stockholm based andreas tilliander is a name thats been synonymous with the underground electronic music scene for a while now, from his contribution to the glitch genre in the early 1990s through to winning a swedish grammy and producing under various monikers creating a variety of sonic art. this includes his previous echocord released lowfour alias, the raster.noton seminal moikra cliphop album and his more recently explored tm404 project which has seen him release on skudge and kontra-musik. tillianders ofog ep kicks off with an upfront and club leaning track entitled storet, which is driven by deep kicks and crisp hats that both sit tightly at each end of the mix, leaving room for twisted chords and delayed synth swells to fill the gap. next up comes the fine dub-tinged and spacious aesthetic of oliveros, where ethereal textures glide freely alongside the live-sounding tape delayed drums, accompanied by a deep, weaving sub. closing the package is risset, in which a half time bass line chugs alongside vibrantly saturated percussion escorted by dubby chords and glitchy atmospherics.

the haven white label series is back after a year’s break with the fifth instalment of the infamous sardonic tonality compilation series - this time with three newcomers to the imprint and one existing label artist visiting the series for the first time.

vinyl only , after a short break unison wax returns with a brand new four-track collection of music from the bossman himself, diego krause. the berliner took a year off in 2016, concentrating on other projects and letting the label have a rest, but now he’s back with a refined sound. unison wax embodies a more sophisticated aesthetic, with warm analogue hues and subtle textures to push things forward a little. after all, we couldn’t come back from a break without progressing, huh?! first out of the blocks is ‘nihilate’, which helps introduce this updated unison wax sound, crisp beats lock us into a groove in conjunction with a dainty selection of analogue effects and a funky little b-line. diego carefully adds new elements as the track progresses, keeping you interested right until the end. next is the title track, ‘rituals’, which kicks off with an insistent bassline and spellbinding percussion that keeps you gripped from the off. he throws in some claps to add energy and muted pads, which slowly rise to prominence, giving the track an emotive atmosphere which wraps itself around you. one for the eternal dreamers… flip the record over for side b and ‘dysfunction’, which turns things grimy. marauding beats and bass conspire to create a morose atmosphere. diego’s penchant for super sharp beats is present here again, and the energy builds slowly but surely. a new layer creeps in every few bars and sucks you right into the track’s lair. expertly done, and impossible to resist, this is darkside pressure at its best. ‘eudaimonia’ rounds things off, with more deep grooves. initially propelled by minimal percussion, the track really gets going when more beats are added. it maintains a laid back feeling and, while the drums are solid, the atmosphere is mostly quite soft with swirling pads keeping things light in the top end. when they fall away towards the end of the track we have a rather gnarly close to the composition, as the beats and bass take over. and there it is, the welcome return of unison wax – smooth and refined for 2017…

as modularz approaches it s 50th release - label owner developer decided to feature a 4 track sampler taken from the new lp by chicago s zachary lubin named -omronicon- this is modularz 49 to be exact and features a wealth of groove based bangers all carrying the same aesthetic and theme through the recordings. it s hard to pin point if this is a hard or deep release so let s say it s entirely both and with good reason - it s also very synth heavy and gains ongoing momentum the more you listen. it s very obvious that modularz puts out excellent techno and this is by far no exception. tip

b-stock! cover with seam split. vinyl unaffected & mint. them records welcomes back hiroaki iizuka for the its fifth outing. having supplied the the run as the labels first record, here iizuka doubles its play time and track listing length in his stunning voodoo ep. the extra time offered allows iizuka to flex more of his versatile style. them as a label sets out to eschew a techno norm largely made up of a traditional 4 x 4 sound. having come from a london background, the curating of the label gives a nod to the rave sounds of the capital - especially d&b, garage, breakbeat hardcore and grime. that is to say of course along with its characteristic aesthetic of horror and the gothic.
in iizuka them found a common ground: based in hokkaido, japan, iizuka does not share the same london influences, yet shares their base values and thrust. common themes of his sound involve broken and syncopated beats, and a rave energy. this is what lead him to being the first and prime them stable artist. voodoo ep showcases this breadth of iizuka’s style, from tracks that could easily fit into any grime set, such as primitive acid, to the more melodic tones of floating point, in which hiroaki guides them into previously untrodden ground for the imprint.

repress - german duo obscure shape & shdw drop three robust techno tracks in their first full release on rekids this may. one of the most exciting acts in techno today, obscure shape & shdw are the founders of from another mind - the label and party series making waves in south-germany. aside from rekids, where they remixed radio slave’s ‘vision’ last year, the pair’s abilities in the studio have seen them invited by slam for two separate remixes of monoloc and envoy on soma, with more projects to be announced. ‘himmel und erde’ is a cavernous cut boasting colossal kicks and skipping percussion before a tantalising melody comes into play. ‘am ende der welt’ is more deep and atmospheric in comparison, blending dusky percussion with echoing synths until ‘gefallene engel’ demonstrates syncopated drums and an otherworldly hook that conjure up a mesmerising aesthetic to conclude the release.

breakage continues his excellent run of releases on his own label with the liff up ep. the fourth release showcases the different shades within the current index aesthetic, confidently showing you can recontextualise definitive jungle and drum & bass sound palettes by avoiding throwback cliches and keeping to a consistently high production value. the label has been a runaway success for breakage, a place where he can make and release the sound closest to his heart and the results have shown that this is the perfect place for the storied producer.

matt edwards launches stranger in the night with his first solo material since 2017. the rekids offshoot will release regular music by four artists, namely radio slave, king britt, anthony rother and fred p, who will each drop three eps over the next year. “with rekids being 100% focused on releasing music for dance floors i felt the need to create a new platform to explore a wider musical vision and invite some of my all-time electronic musical heroes to be a part of the series,” says matt edwards. both numbers near the 12-minute mark but each track portrays a different aesthetic. opening with precision drums and crystalline notes, ‘ground control’ makes a nod towards the hi-tech soul sound of detroit and drives forward using a sultry bassline, erratic chords and the occasional icy stab as an array of contrasting sounds operate in unison. on the flip, a syncopated rhythm lays the foundation for ‘last communication’ whilst a tantalising melody joins poignant synths, constructing a profound and hypnotising journey.

utopia cloak arrives on film with six track ep, marina gardens. utilising both electronic & acoustic components, the british producer crafts hazy, dynamic electronica with a decidedly emotive bent. the music explores a curious production aesthetic - at once half sunk and at the same time gloriously crisp and direct. caustic drum machine hits underpin the majority of the work, compete with polyrhythmic rolls & glitches, while softly warping synth lines occupy the majority of the remaining sonic space. rather than working explicitly with nostalgia, utopia cloak makes more subtle references to the classic sounds of yore - riffing on downtempo & idm with gentle and considered nuance, eking out arcane hooks & rich melodies with a pleasing focus on compositional structure & songcraft. contrast is the key here, though - and utopia cloak works hard to find the balance between metallic per-cussion strikes and wide-angle instrumental elements, avoiding chaos in favour of a lush, rewarding lis-tening experience.

the ohmgrown series is about more music and less industry. its dub phizix way of getting his ideas to people in the fastest way possible. the entire process- sound design, writing, mixing, mastering will be done in-house by dub phizix, as are the visual elements to accompany the music. there will be no set sound or aesthetic to the series instead the focus is on giving people a window into where he’s at musically and what is inspiring him at the time of creation.

hove’s first record on light of other days gets a second pressing. the first pressing was self-distributed and only 150 copies were made. enjoy! hove’s debut ep is full of fuzzy melodies fused with shimmering arpeggios and reduced cosmic beats. produced at the light of other days headquarters in the heart of zurich, hove developed his sound out of various live-jams, which he recorded onto a tascam cassette recorder. these recordings alongside numerous field recordings build the foundation of the ep journey to arendal. influenced by the sound aesthetic of early electronic producers from the 80’s and 90’s, as well as contemporary house, disco or techno, hove’s music always has a certain kind of warmth to it. dusty, shuffling grooves meet woozy guitar chords while crystal clear synth melodies are paired with field recordings of rivers, birds or nocturnal city atmospheres. journey to arendal is out on january 29th, 2016 on light of other days.

californian electronic pop duo peaking lights make a splash on dekmantel with sea of sand the bands first release in 2018. its a kaleidoscopic melting-pot of dainty dub, experimental and leftfield beats, with wondrous sunny soundscapes that blend together the unconventional home-fashioned electronics, and windswept vocals that have defined peaking lights to date. sea of sand is the band’s first record in three years not released on their own imprint. with six tracks, exceeding 30 minutes in total, the extended ep is a prelude to a forthcoming lp. with a diy aesthetic and approach to analogue instrumentalism, peaking lights retro-digital sound is one that sits perfectly with dekmantel.

focusing on low-slung idm, acid and atmospheric electro with nods to krautrock & ambient sounds, steve hy-lands attraktta project gets an extended outing on the film label. across eight beautifully produced tracks, hyland - one of the founding members of ai records and subsequently concrete plastic, explores vibrant synthesis and intricate drum programming, with the music arriving at a sweet spot between home listening material & club-ready workouts for more intelligent dance floors. eschewing straightforward synth sequences in favour of blissed out - almost disharmonious sonics, hyland trans-mits a curious psychedelia on his debut lp. sounds pitch and warp organically, buoyed up by saturated low end and punchy drum machine percussion. there remains a decidedly accomplished precision to the work, though - with the music bearing all the hallmarks of an artist of some considerable experience - testament to the british pro-ducer & label heads 19 years working in the industry. a colourful, exquisitely composed lp that riffs on a timeless production aesthetic with considerable style, echo principle is a fantastic entry into the film records discography.

boogie café enlist the expertise of goshawk & erik rico to provide the goodness for the next instalment in their boogie café black series. the home e.p. houses four versions of the title track with side a serving up a piano vibe mix, alongside a dub mix for good measure. the vibe mix layers a bassy, bumping piano line & erik s rnb flavoured vocals behind a shuffling beat before a soulful flute line takes centre stage. on a slightly different tip the dub mix drops the flute in favour of echoed out stabs for a sparser and tougher aesthetic, readymade for the dancefloor. flip it over and the percussion vibe mix adds in some choice congas and bongos, combined with sustained organ-style synths and jazzy piano chords, creating a more summertime soul style to the track. the fourth and final dub mix sees goshawk use erik s vocals in short but sweet snippets, adding extra atmosphere to the track but allowing the piano and percussion to lead the way.

for over 18 years, spectral sound, the dance music imprint of ghostly international, has thrived at the forefront of techno and house. it has been a source of support for numerous djs and producers during that time, from matthew dear and benoit & sergio to avalon emerson and hieroglyphic being. now, spectral brings the past alongside the present with its latest release, a compilation that offers a vibrant cross-section of the current moment in underground dance music. despite the wide-ranging selections on spectral 139, a throughline of classic style and infectious energy emerges from the up-and-coming and established artists alike. rising talents such as minimal violence, russell e.l. butler, and earth trax x newborn jr. bring unique perspectives to their hardware-centric productions. veteran producers bring their own edge as well: d marc cantu blows the roof off with the outsized funk of regularly people, and nigil caenaans januarys end, a low-key detroit classic from the late 90s, closes spectral 139 with a whirlwind of manic rhythms and sedate synths. gunnar haslam opens the tracklist with his acidic mindbender, versione antica. and ghostly regulars like tadd mullinix, who drops a lush jtc remix of his new x-altera alias, and matrixxman, who collaborates with riccardo limiti on the cavernous inferno, tie everything back to the label s roots. the double 12 compilation, as well as each individual single, features original work by los angeles-based artist nina hartmann. her designs have appeared on releases from labels such as ascetic house and big love, and the pieces for spectral 139 continue to develop her cryptic aesthetic. the marriage of hartmanns striking, high-contrast symbols with such bold dance music speaks to a collection that aims to stand out.

new yorker electronic producer dj spider is back on itay’s out-er with a muggy, abstract techno release “human erosion field ep”, similarly to its debut “v ep”, released in september 2017 and produced in featuring with his longtime friend phil moffa.
italian label out-er presents its twenty-sixth release continuing to explore the diverse musical path between house, techno and experimental electronic - which appears in most cases on out-er’s sub-label pregnant void. “human erosion field ep” otherworldly showcases both a radiant take on electronic as well as gloomy and wild-eyed pieces, an aesthetic approach for which dj spider has been most known in the scene. overlooking to the style of the tracks, the release does contain a sinister mood and a dense, solid sense of groove overall, a typical recurring feature of the producer’s previous outputs.

bondage music label-founders pornbugs return to the imprint this september with their ‘pacho’ ep, backed with remixes from pablo bolivar and phillipp gonzales. leipzig/berlin based duo pornbugs make a welcome return to their own label here with two new original cuts, ‘pacho’ opens the package with stripped-back drums, a bulbous bass line and choppy piano chords running alongside a bubbling arpeggio lead and tension building stab sequences. pablo bolivar’s rawmake of pacho follows, edging things into deeper territory with dropped tempo dusty drums, airy pads and an amalgamation of wandering, resonant synth lines. the second half of the release, pencilled for release as vinyl only features another original from pornbugs, entitled ’larica’ and featuring a similar aesthetic to the lead with fluttering dubby chords, a refined drum groove and unfolding atmospherics carrying the groove before label regular phillipp gonzales turns in his remix to complete the package, taking things in a more raw direction with heavily swung crunchy drums, pulsating filtered stabs and billowing vocal murmurs.

phaedrus is the monikor of dutch dj and producer joris kamma who currently resides in seattle. drawing from multiple techno and house influences in the early nineties, joris developed his own unique aesthetic best described as deep and quirky sounds always combined with a strong groove. for this special transfusions release, joris has crafted 4 minimal yet powerful techno weapons that are sure to bend the minds and heighten the energy of the crowd in the way that only perfect techno can. simply put, this is classic techno at it s finest!

albrecht la brooy s analogue attic imprint welcomes citizen maze onto its roster with the four-track serenity in the woods ep. australian duo albrecht la brooy have been steadily carving out a name for themselves over the past few years with their jazz-inflected take on deep house via the likes of apollo/r&s, night tide and of course their own analogue attic imprint which has become a home for their own output as well as fellow australian artists like sleep d, rings around saturn and more. here though we see the label offer up the inaugural ep from melbourne s adam mccoy aka citizen maze. leading on the package is the ten-minute natural playgroun , embracing the labels signature field recording background aesthetic whilst stirring in organic drum grooves, fluttering pads and jazzy sax licks throughout. glade hollow follows with bumpy, off-kilter drums and ethereal chords at its core whilst horn lines and twinkling synth melodies wander across its eight-minute duration. moonlight sanctuary opens the flip-side, edging into darker territories with murky dubbed out synth flourishes, robust drums and tension building strings before title-track serenity in the woods rounds out the package, laying focus on a snaking sub bass groove, metallic percussive shuffles and expansive atmospherics.

this summer, my favorite robot records release another of their excellent and immersive full lengths, this time from german production outfit, rework. the trio of daniel varga, michael kuebler and sascha hedgehog aka rework, describe their musical aesthetic as cabaret-independent-house and combine icy minimal structures with catchy euro-girl vocals, anglo-french funk antics and a dash of dance floor melancholy. playhouse, meant and items & things have all released their work, which includes three albums before now. this latest is another musical adventure filled with surprises. this is an effortlessly diverse album that brings a wide range of influences to the table and ties them all together with reworks unique sense of style and cool

uk producer pessimist opens the ep. his unique aesthetic of jungle/drum&bass - come - techno certainly makes its presence felt on the a-side as he delivers a monster of a remix, soaked in dark, brooding textures and broken rhythms. another uk techno export makes his debut on soma as shifted lends his remix skills to the package. pulsating and propulsive, shifted exudes pure energy with his version of santolaya. prolific french producer umwelt closes out the ep with his interpretation of belga. an old skool, electro affair umwelt still retains a melancholic edge to the production.

the wonderfully monikered golden flamingo was one of many labels operating alongside the now legendary p&p records imprint in late 70 s to early 80 s nyc. fans of deep disco, raw gritty soul and rare as hen s teeth electro and early rap know of the cult status of it s brief but influential output and in recent years the p&p label and it s associated entities have enjoyed further popularity through the exposure of it s music by some of the world s most respected dj s and selectors, and rightfully so. an amazingly lo-fi, endearing and overtly underground aesthetic runs through all of the labels, from the label artwork down to the music itself. this style is evident on margo williams epic god save and protect all the children , a colossally rare 12- from back in 1980.

for those that knoe delves deeper into the archives once more to repackage a bundle of hard to find cuts on vinyl that have been staple supplies in ben s record bag over the years. the early to mid 2000s was a period of minimal techno overload, finding quality house music then was a challenge compared to today. rather than follow the herd, some european producers took influence from the original minimal pioneers and fused those approaches with house music themes in order to push a unique sound of the era. they turned minimal on its head and gave took it in a different direction. canson from switzerland released a handful of records between 2002 and 2005 that were a prime example of this aesthetic. stripped back beats with syncopated melodies - perfect cuts for those early sets or hazy morning sessions. the three tracks featured on this compilation were originally released on two solo eps for canson: itsudemo and holiday plug in, both of which have claimed squatter s rights in my record bag for almost 15 years. i don t think i ve played one early slot or house set without one of them. this record is quite a personal one for me as it s a representation of my deeper sound as a dj. now the original records are a little hard to find so im so glad to share my choice picks of cansons material on a my label.

following on from angophora s beautiful long player, ken oath is back with another full length lp from low flung. friends of the label will note that this is his third release for ken oath, and it s a fittingly mature and expansive statement for a debut lp. perhaps mature is the wrong word here, as all his brilliant ideas are backed up by a sense of whimsy that betrays his playful side. the music strikes a balance between styles and spaces that could perfectly soundtrack moments at home, in the club, and in the liminal spaces between. danny s efforts at writing dance music still contain the idiosyncratic approaches of his ambient works: the deadly deep subs and endless echo spirals on -rising damp- sounds like someone trying to piece together a drum & bass track after an off-hand conversation about the genre. he s transmuted the propulsive energy of jungle into something no less dynamic, full of stops and starts and sonic pressure but flush with space. -tarp climber- is at heart a rollicking digi-dub. the more ambient moments of the lp are equally captivating - the glassy tones of -frozen coat- sound like a space-age ensemble soundtracking a floating lounge on a suite of glass instruments, while -ocean grove- blends field recordings and dreamy synthesizer melodies to create an uncanny sense of place that unroots you from wherever you re listening. there s a heavy emphasis on danny s collaborators as well - the cold emotion duo is reprised on the spacey ‘hills hoist’. closer -bacchus marsh- is a collaboration with prophets, a cross-state ensemble that defy any easy categorisation. the music here flirts with jazz and minimalism but with a dubwise production aesthetic to produce something that recalls khan jamal s visionary -drum dance to the motherland- in spirit and practice, but this whole album sounds as otherworldly and one-of-a-kind as the aforementioned lp.

one of our humble imprint s closest allies and a longstanding pillar of philadelphia s electronic music community, billy werner has been a constant presence in the booth at parties throughout the northeast corridor since 1998. we debuted his m//r alias in 2014 with the gathering response data 12- . since he s been busy bringing the grit to points beyond the city of brotherly love, putting in work for the likes of detailssound, l.i.e.s. and jackdept. most recently, he turned out a remix of karen gwyer s -why does your father look so nervous- for the rembo remixes on don t be afraid, as well as another for chaperone s -grit neglect- on the aforementioned snapbackbalaclava ep. written, recorded, and mixed over a period of 15 months, among the methods is in no small part a reflection of the affinities and sensibilities billy holds as both selector and producer. referencing a variety of influences from jazz to dub to electro, the album s allure stems from his deft ability to recontextualize those genres disparate aspects into a familiar–yet fiercely idiosyncratic–musical context. the end result is at once wildly fractured and precision-focused as among the methods finds its own seductive rhythm within a matrix of dub echoes and modulated low-end. it s heady ground,to be sure,as well as the most declarative aesthetic statement fromm//r to date. presented without further comment. the music is the message

it sounded all right through two walls, so what s the problem? the final words of two walls, the fast and very catchy leading track of dj marcelle s new record, sum up an aesthetic almost lost in today s musical climate, where often a pleasing attitude and overproduced music sadly rule, even in so-called alternative circles. the quote comes from the late mark e. smith (1957 - 2018), legendary frontman of the fall, and is taken from some of the conversations marcelle had with smith over the years. smith is referring to a recording process but for marcelle his words stand for something bigger.
